For the polygon, it is logically not actived.
This option works with MultiGeometry (MultiPath/MultiPolygon). If you create MultiPolygon via Merge Polygons you be able to split it back to the single polygons:

If you cancel, the point with arrow is still here. You can’t really cancel it ! You must save it first and then cancel it with right click or other function in the Placemark Manager.
No, you can unpress "Add Placemark" or press "Move" button:
